I will be holding my 2nd cookie exchange on Dec. 11th this year. My niece would like to come this year, but she's not really a baker. She asked me if it would be alright if she could bring fudge instead of cookies? Has anyone ever had anyone ask them this or bring any to their parties? If so, how much should she bring? One piece or two doesn't seem like much...or would it be 3 or 4 pieces for each person like the cookies? We had 12 people last year and they each brought 6 dozen cookies. This year I have asked for 7 dozen-should she bring 7 dozen pieces of fudge? Thanks for any info you can share with me. Cindy

I will be hosting my 7th cookie exchange this year. I believe it was two years ago I made fudge. I made the same amount as I would have cookies. There are 12 of us in our group - same group from the beginning. For the last couple of exchanges, several ladies have brought candy instead of cookies. Now sometimes the candy couldn't be counted by pieces so she would just bag up a generous amount for everyone. One girl made glazed pecans last year and gave each of us a nice size bag. Hope this helps.

My swap "rules" say that fudge, toffee or truffles are allowed. (I just don't want those saltine cracker things that Robin mentions... ewww...) Last year at my swap, someone brought toffee and bagged pieces of it for everyone. That went over fine. (Even the dog stole some off the dining room table! ) But I had the cookie bakers wrap theirs in packages of six to make the swapping easy. If you bake a small-sized cookie, six cookies doesn't look like much in a bag. So a block of fudge or candy in a bag seems fine. I would say the only problem would be if you're taking cookies off of plates going around a table and you're not sure how much everyone gets. With that style swap, I would say slice the fudge into pieces that can be counted and have it plated. Otherwise, if you're packaging, say, a dozen cookies for each person attending, she could leave the fudge whole and package it in small bricks for everyone. Tell her to use her best judgement with the amount, knowing what she is getting in return. My swap is Sunday (Dec 11) and I actually had my friend's 17-yr old daughter ask a few weeks ago if she could bring some sort of sweet "trail mix" which is impossible to "count." Even though it's her first time baking, I told her nicely that I didn't want the ladies to think I gave her special treatment (since my guidelines say "cookies must be homemade and baked"). She agreed to make a cookie instead. Great. Only problem: Now her mother wants to make some sort of pretzel mnm kiss treat. Oh well. ;D
