Does anyone know how this works? I'm thinking of having an ornament exchange in place of a gift exchange this year. Thanks.

I ask everyone to bring a wrapped "gently used" ornament. Everyone has one they don't like or are tired of and that way nobody has to spend money to buy a new one. Then, everyone picks a piece of paper with a number and the person with #1 gets to pick one out of the pile and open it. Then, #2 person can either steal from another person before she opens the package or pick from the pile. And so on down the line. It is alot of fun because some ornaments are very old, some are very ugly and some are very nice. We have one ugly ornament that keeps showing up every year and everybody can't wait to see who gets it! Sometimes we let the first person pick from the others since she didn't have a choice in the beginning. Another option is to call the numbers backwards which surprises everybody because they have already figured out where they are in the number line and then you change the order. There is another option to not let anybody open their package until all the exchanging is over. And one more option is to limit the number of times a pkg. can be stolen. We limit it to 3 times.
Probably more than you wanted to know, but hope this helps
