Hi Lorree, Here's the formula (this year will be cookie swap #6 here!): Assuming there are 16 people (including you), everyone brings 72 cookies, and doesn't take their own kind. 72 of one kind, divided by 15 people (because we're not taking from our own, remember) equals 4.8 cookies each. However, this will leave 12 of each kind left over. (4 x 15 = 60). Each person will still take home 72 cookies, so you can tell your guests to take four of each kind, then go around again when everyone's through and have one more of a kind or two they really want. This way, everyone is sure to get four of each kind, but then they can police themselves to divide up the remaining twelve on each plate. Hope that make sense...not too confusing. Good luck! Nicole

why wouldnt they take the kind that they brought? What if I had 18 people each bring 6 dozen?

Ok does this sound right?
I will have 18 guests each bring 6 dozen or 72 cookies. I will have them go around and take 4 of each kind so each guest will end up with 68 cookies on their plate. There will then be 4 cookies left on each of the 18 plates so I will then ask each guest to go around and pick 4 more from the plates so they end up with 72.
Does that sound right? Oh this is sooo confusing! :-)

This is my second year to host a cookie exchange... we bake enough cookies for each guest to take back home 1/2 dozen of each of the yummy treats. I also request them to pre-package the 1/2 dozens and I give a prize for the best dressed cookies. (the guests vote for their favorite looking/festively decorated cookies).

Your guests will only need to make one round around the tables! Did you include yourself in the count? If not let me know and I'll help ya figure it out **Kate**

I have my guests package the cookies in packages of 6. If you bring 5 dozen, that's 10 packages. If 11 people show up, everyone gets 1/2 dozen of each (not taking the one they brought).
There's no math to do. Cookies don't get touched by 20 hands. They're easy to pack up in a shopping bag, and they go straight to the freezer.

I am planning to have 16 guests for my cookie exchange and thought I would ask them each to make 4 dozen, wrapped in packages of 6. I then plan to divide the 16 guests into one group of say, Prancer and another of Dancer and have the groups exchange among themselves. Each guest will go home with 8 individually wrapped half dozen cookie packages. Marie

I had the same problem last year. Thats why this year they are bringing a dozen for each person. I know it sounds like a lot but it is so much easier and nobody is complaining about the amount they have to bake. This way everyone is putting their cookies in christmas tins or bags to make transporting the cookies easier too.

:oI had the same question, however, I asked my guests to bring 6 dozen prepackaged in a container. My husband suggested putting numbers in a hat. For example, #1 person comes in. I put 6 #1s in a hat, the #2 comes in, I do the same. When everyone comes in, they pick 6 numbers from the hat. Hopefully only picking one of each number to go home with the numbers picked containers. Does this make sense? I need an idea if they are already coming in a cute tin.
