I am having my first cookie swap this year and have two questions. When should I have the exchange? Christmas falls on a weekend this year. I don't want to have it to close to the holiday, but don't want the cookies to get stale before my guests arrive. My second question is that do you suggest freezing the cookies between now and the holidays? I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Don't worry about when you have your cookie exchange. I'm sure there is enough competition with everyone else trying to get their parties in as well. I usually have mine on a Saturday afternoon (I have also done Sunday afternoons) from 1-4pm. I usually do mine early but this year I am having a hard time deciding on a date because everyone else is having parties of some kind.
I always have quart size zip lock bags available for guests so that they can keep each kind of cookie separate. Usually by the time you get home with the cookies the flavors have all gelled. Anyway, I always freeze mine right after the party (keeping each cookie type separate of course). They will last right up until Christmas if not longer. Of course if the cookie is dusted with powdered sugar they won't freeze well.

Thank you so much! This was very helpful. I'm going to wing it this year and we'll see how it goes.

I'm hosting on Dec. 11th and I sent the invitations via Evite on November 3rd. (Mailed hard copies to those without email.) It's a Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 and that's what I did last year. I did move mine up one week to 2 weeks before Christmas instead of one. Cookies keep great in the freezer --or in Boston in a cold garage. Go with what Bonnie says and store varieties separately. I've gotten a great response so far. (20 people) We'll see if all the yes's show up!
