My cooking club has hosted a cookie exchange for the last 4 years, very similar to what Robin does, but with fewer rules.

One thing we have added: everyone bakes an extra amount (6, 12, whatever) and all the "extras" are collected. The next day, someone takes them to a homeless shelter or the Ronald McDonald house.

I think the spirit of giving is great when it comes to the cookie swap. My swap was yesterday and I asked for canned food donations to the food pantry. They're less perishable than cookies. Plus, there is no temptation to open a can of chicken noodle soup.
