Anyone ever sold Christmas cookies? I'm a sahm looking to make some side cash and make some pretty good Christmas cookies (so I've been told) ;D And would love to sell them to friends and family for a small fee. Do I need any kind of license? Where can I get this info?

Selling Christmas cookies is a great money making idea, but lots of intensive labor. I attended a craft show this past weekend and purchased some Kiffels and Rugelah cookies, made by two separate individuals. The woman selling the kiffels sold 200 dozen within one hour - no word of lie - she was gone from the building at 10:15 a.m. The Rugelah lady sold hers all day long, but never sold out. The truth be told, the Rugelahs were much tastier than the kiffels. These gals both had a food license from the state - Dept of Agriculture. If you have a dog living in your home, don't bother applying for one - you won't get one. Go for it this year !

Hi, mom. Requirements for food businesses are different from state to state. If you're only planning to sell to friends and family, I wouldn't worry about it. I used to bake and sell to friends and family and by the third or fourth year, I got so busy (just by word of mouth) that I decided to start an actual business. That's when I learned all about licensure regs. I opened my bakery/cafe in September, 2000 and sold it (for a nice profit) this past May. I kept the most lucrative part of the business only (Cookies!!!) and now bake them out of a friend's restaurant and sell them wholesale. So I say, go for it!

What is the current price for one dozen cookies? I know it varies by cookie type, but I have been considering getting into this business as well. Knowing the ¨going rate¨will help me make a decision.
