Looking for a movie, and I don't know the name...

Hey, I'm looking for a 70's movie, I think 72, or 73, I'm not really sure though. Anyway, it is about a writer (I think) and his British wife moving to England, where they are then harassed by the men they hired to work on their house, and it ends up with them sheltering a mentally off boy, and all kinds of weird crap by the end, but other then that, I don't remember much. I thought it was kind of a funny movie though, so I wished to find it. No, it isn’t a comedy, but I have a warped sense of humor, they hung their cat in the closet.

This may be really difficult to figure out but, there was this movie on either USA, HBO, TBS, PAX:

These two women (one had similar facial features of Bette Midler, but she was very short, chubby with a pointed nose and brunette short hair. She was a married women maybe in her mid-50's who's marriage was on the rocks and she was having an affair with a stage show manager who managed broadway type show girls. She and her friend worked in a sewing factory and her friend's husband held a blue collar job and they had two kids;, I believe, one day while working at the sewing factory her friend fainted, the friend never disclosed to her friend, husband nor kids that she was very ill. When she fainted and ended up in the hospital and was dismissed, her friend decided to take her on a trip, they traveled to Las Vegas, that is when she told her friend that she was very ill and she had always wanted to go to Vegas, neither of the two husbands new that they had ventured out on a trip to Vegas. When she returned home, she was bedridden and then died.
