Hi Summer,
I think for one thing the potency has changed. I smoked lots of pot in the 70's and still induldge today. Maybe age and frequency has something to do with it, but I definitely feel the potency has increased quite a bit over the past 30 years.
Besides that, I don't think it is so much the difference in the drugs now and then, but more so the presiding attitude towards drugs back then. Although they were still illegal, we considered them just more or less a part of every day life. We didn't plan so much to do drugs as much as drugs were a part of an event that we experienced. Camping Trip, a concert, road trip whatever it may be.
I get the sense today that it is all about the high and not so much mixing the high with the true life experience. Hope this helps a bit... Good Luck

I don't know too much about drugs now. But then, well, drugs were pretty common. I was not a power user at all. Every party included pot, sometimes hash and drinking. I was also exposed to qualudes (very strong downers), acid, crank and marijuana. I didn't like any of it. I got through college on mini-whites and drinking. Mini whites (prescribed by a quack) to keep me going and drinking just to have fun.
Drugs were part of the anti-establishment culture I think. We didn't want to be anything like the previous generation.
I remember the ridiculous films they showed us in health class about drugs. They were so far off the truth that everyone just laughed at them. It wasn't until later that everyone realized that drugs really are bad for you.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

To add to my first posting and more in line with your question. The popular drugs were:
Marijuana Acid (Blotter, a strip of paper with some sort of cartoon character on it, Mickey Mouse etc. with LSD absorbed in it.) Shrooms (magic Mushrooms) Qualudes (Lemon 714) Uppers (Black Beauties) Hash Coke wasn't so big in the 70's, but picked up late in the decade. more of an 80's staple...

The acid of today has way to much speed in in. I mean, or so I've been told.
