early 70s toy

I hope I can describe this right because it is barely remembered. nontheless, i will try.
this toy was sort of a frame that had black knobs on the face. you would take a character, which was just an outline and pretty cartoonish (i think it came with 3) and insert it on the knobs. then you could turn some more knobs on the bottom of the frame to make the character move.
the characters were pinkish or purpleish and sort of a rubbery foam. of course i could be remembering wrong.
does this ring any sort of bell with anyone?

Well, this is a no-brainer...the Duncan Yo-yo's!!!!! (Anyone remember them???)

a no brainer - maybe for you. i always thought yo-yo's were sort of ball shaped things on strings that you would throw down with a flick of your wrist and then would return to you.
