I have no idea what made that song pop into my head but I had to google it because I had no idea who sang it. Then I found this sight where the question about it was asked....too cool.
Anyway, yes, I do remember that blood curdling song and it creeped me out then as a pre-teen. My mother wouldn't allow my sister and I to listen to it.
Whoever included the lyrics, thanks!

I was traumatized by that song when I was around 8. My best friend had surround sound stereo in her playroom even back then and would crank it up loud to freak me out. "I remember" the two haunting notes going back and forth like an ambulance. I can't think about it today without getting shivers. I ALWAYS listened to the rock radio station in Indianapolis, had a little radio in the shape of a ball that I kept by my bed at night. My folks had gone out and the babysitter was over. The song came on my little radio and I would NOT go to sleep until my parents came home. Shortly after that they yanked the song. Weird memories. Kirsten

I remember this song. I've been trying to find a copy of it for a while now. Thanks for the link you gave on this site. I was around 8 or 9 when this song came out. Could not remember the band's name," Bloodrock". I know some people thought this song was morbid, but I thought it was great! The only way I could listen to it when I was a kid was to listen to a friend of my sister's 45. Never heard it on the radio.

That song ran through my head every time I saw an MVA. Quite spooky music and could be the theme song for MADD. Thanks for the memory! Good job. Ed Z

thanks for all the great info on this song. like another person the song was in my head but i couldn't remember who did it. i had searched mp3 rocket but until i had the group name, no luck. when i searched mp3rocket a whole bunch of other songs came up from the same group. i'm d/ling them now to see if any of them ring any bells, or sirens as the case may be. i do agree with those who say this refers to an auto accident. hey, i was in my 20's then and going to live forever so it didn't apply to me. after about 20 motor vehicle collisions of both auto and motorcycle i'm beginning to wonder when this will be my experience.

For awhile I was thinking I was the only one who remembered this song, though I actually thought it was done earlier than the 70's. But like others in the D.C. area, I remember it playing for just a short time before it got yanked from the airwaves.
Thanks!

Hey thanks for making that available! Something triggered a memory of that song tonight and of course it started playing in my head so I just had to hear it again. Like the others, I couldn't remember the name of the band, just the title, DOA.
I just listened to it very closely and the lyrics are clearly "we were flying alone and hit something in the air". I did some googling on the lyrics and it turns out the lead guitarist himself has said in the past it's about a plane crash, not a car crash. ;D

I have another question in reference to a 70's song .. about a car wreck where a guy was killed. A co-worker is looking for it and I can't find any reference to anything on the internet. She doesn't know who sang it or the name of it. lol

I think what made this song really creepy was the weird organ drone that was played. Especially at the end (right before the sirens), the organ started going down in tone...... that messed with my head! I was about 11 and listened to it really late one night, then went to bed..... no sleep that night! LOL!!

???I always thought this was a car crash....flying low back in those days meant driving really fast! Going air borne was a high feeling.... The attendant was not a flight attendant it was the ambulance driver....
this song always gave me nightmares!.

Well, I'll jump in on this. It appears like it is a slow running conversation, but I enjoyed catching up. I was about 12....didn't know what flying low was ....so assumed it was a plane crash. It was extremely scary listening up in my room on the transistor I snuck in bed at night. I was in Upstate NY, and this was on WTRY, so it wasn't just in the DC area. I don't recall it being pulled off though. I thought of it from time to time over the years and probably hadn't heard it in 40 years.....until just now when I thought of it and listened to it on Spotify! It's still unnerving. Thanx for the stroll!

I was 16. The lyrics early in this post are not quite right. "We were flying LOW and hit something in the air." Definitely about a car driving FAST. I like the example by an earlier post... driving 150 mph, hitting a bump to be airborne, and then hitting a telephone pole. I lived in the midwest... wasn't pulled from the airwaves. I loved to drive fast (long, straight stretches of highway across the plains) and listening to that song. We're crazy when we're young... flirting with death and laughing into the wind. Duchess

Supposedly the author was a small plane pilot and had a friend who died in a crash. All I know is that I'd light a bunch of candles in my darkened bedroom, burn some incense, and drop a tab of acid and listen to a tape I made that played D.O.A. On repeat. What a trip! Goth before goth became a thing.

A friend of my sisters introduced her to this song in the early 70s. I recently came across it in an article, and remembered it. The song was done by a group called Bloodrock. One of the earlier posts stated that the lyric is "we were flying LOW." That post is correct. The musician who wrote the lyrics to the song had just taken a flying lesson, and his instructor went back up and got into an accident shortly after takeoff, and ultimately died on the way to the hospital. It was not a car accident. It was a small aircraft accident. There was a video done that reflected that the accident was an auto accident; however that is not the experience that led to the inspiration for writing this song. Bloodrock was into music that made statements for the time. I do believe, however, that this would really be a great song to play for an ad done by mothers against drunk driving (MADD), based on the video that incorrectly identified this as a drunk driver who died, and also responsible for another who was killed as a result of the accident. That would never happen, because it would be considered politically incorrect. One has to question, is it politically incorrect to make a strong statement to stop people from driving when they have been drinking, whether behind the wheel of a car, or piloting an aircraft, or a boat? ?
