Hi Robin! I just have to tell you how much I love your site. I've had it bookmarked for years and whenever I get a hankering for nostalgia I come here. I grew up in Prince Georges County (New Carrollton) and then moved to Silver Spring (a '79 Springbrook graduate) so I was your neighbor! Our frame of reference is really almost identical, except for your memory is better than mine. I've lived in Europe, California, New York and Chicago, but when I wanted to settle down and raise a family I came back to good old Maryland. I love it here, although its changed tremendously over the years. Thanks again for making this happy place. Its honestly been the source of much joy and happiness for me over the years.

Dear Blueeyes, Thank you for your kind comments. I get satisfaction knowing I created a virtual "piece for home" for displaced Marylanders. I was a displaced MDer for 16 years, so I know what it's like. (I lived in CA). But it was before the web, so all I could do was day dream about driving to "da beach", or Duckpin Bowling, or having a crab feast. There are just some things you can do in Maryland that you CAN'T do anywhere else! Welcome back home.

Hi Robin, We moved to Maryland in 1968. We lived for many years in Forestville, my mother lived in forestville till the day she died in 2004. I now live in Calvert County Md. but I remeber forestville in the 70's and it was my favorite place to be.

Hi Robin,
I'm from the South, but I lived in Silver Spring back in 1988. I really loved it. I am retiring in 2 years and seriously thinking about moving back there. Maryland is so laid back and not as fast-paced as DC. Thanks for your website, also. I loved the 60's and 70's....my favorite decades of all.

I'am from the N England area, have been to Maryland many, many times duckpin bowling. Maryland is a nice state, but it doesn't have the best seafood, N England does. It's always real muggy/buggy in the summer time, no real winters and people talk funny(just joking).

Born in DC, raised in MD, have moved away twice as an adult but coming back for a visit next month. What other state has just the right amount of all 4 seasons? has seashore, mountains and rolling country hills? or a metropolitan/cultural buzz and history to boot? Only Maryland has it all -- I can hardly wait to be there!

Hi everyone,
I've enjoyed reading all the posts about Maryland. I grew up there, but no where near the shore. My family lives in Oakland, MD....near Deep Creek Lake...in western Maryland, in the little triangular shaped piece of the state that's almost not connected to the rest of the state. We don't have seafood there, but the scenery is awesome! I'm now living in Colorado, but I go back as often as I can to see my parents and friends.
Robin - I love your cookie exchange site and used lots of the ideas at my first cookie exchange last Christmas. Am looking forward to having my second one this year, and am already planning for it. Thanks for all the great information!

Hi Jenny, I've always had the intention to check out Western MD but have never made it. The photos I've seen are beautiful. Such variation for such a little state! Good luck with your cookie exchange!

I grew up in Ventura County, CA and went to school at the University Of California, Santa Barbara in the mid 80s. 6 years ago, due to a new career with the Federal govt, we moved to Germantown MD and I now work in Silver Spring. Maryland is a beautiful state and in my opinion, the best family-friendly state in the union.
Based on one of your articles...it is too bad that you didn't like Santa Barbara. I absolutely love that place. Anytime I go on travel back there, whether on business or pleasure, I always make it a point to do the wine runs at the local vineyards, eat tri-tip and authentic mexican food, do my heavy duty surfing at Rincon, play volleyball with friends at East Beach...go to the cute little zoo off Cabrillo Blvd, go bar-hopping up and down State Street and end up at Joe's Cafe, make countless trips to Solvang and gorge on danish food and then do a few holes at the Alisal Canyon...Southern Cali (well SB is technically Central) has lots to offer for the athletic type and the non-active as well...we use to live in Oxnard (not too far from SB), right next to the water and the weather is gorgeous - fog coming in early morn, burn off to a nice 70 for much of the day, and fog back in again for the nigh - repeat for about 360 days of the year. We didn't need A/C and the nice coastal air was all we needed. We used to do our mountain bike runs an hour away to the santa monica mountains, splash right on the beach after the runs, and head back home refreshed and tanned.
Yes, some of beaches are tar-filled, but that's because of the off-shore drilling...there's a reason why they called SB as the American Riviera!
There's no one place in the Union that you can have all the beach, the mountains (i mean real mountains now with at least 6K feet of elevation), the nearby skiing (Big Bear, Lake Tahoe), low humidity weather all in one place. Western Maryland is nice, but it does get cold and snowy. OC is nice in the summer, but is humid, and of course, non-operational in the winter. Montgomery County, where I now live is an excellent place to raise a family, but I still miss the excellent sangrias and margaritas, the wineries, the nice escapes to LA, San Diego, San Francisco, and Catalina Island, the warm coastal sunshine, and the laid-back hellos from fellow surfers...
I know I'm going to bet bashed by everyone here, but just adding to the discussion from a different point of view.
Excellent website BTW...

I love Maryland but won't bash you for your opinions. You're right actually on the things stated. Since living here in AZ, I've visited CA several times and it has already begun to grow on me. The truth is we have a wonderful country with many, many great places. However, for such a small state, Maryland has much more to offer in comparison to others.
