Hey Urbie,
Have you herd anything more about the upcoming Duckpin/Candlepin tournament? Are there many talking about it?
Maybe this will entice some of the candlepin bowlers to join the Duckpin Pro-Tour. Once they bowled in it, they would prefer it better than the candlepin tour.

There's a new candlepin tour starting this fall, and one or two events are in an "ultimate ladder" format, similar to a DPBA stop. Also, the DPBA pays a LOT more than candlepin tournaments. That's what got my attention. Judging from the results pages, it looks like you usually have to average around 145 or better to cash in a DPBA event -- I'm a long way from that, at this point. There seems to be some buzz surrounding this event (despite the otherwise summer-doldrums spot on the schedule) -- I know some of the RI duckpin guys are going to try it. Some of the top candlepin guys have bowled some duckpins from time to time -- they tend to do pretty well. My guess is that there will be some high scores -- probably take at least 1400 to win. Cape Ann is a very high-scoring house, as candlepin houses go. Urb

They cancelled the duckpin/candlepin tournament, I am sorry to say, because not enough bowlers showed interest. Part of it was the entry fee ($150 is pretty steep for something of a novelty event), and I think because Gloucester, MA is a long way to ask a Rhode Islander to go. Also, one of the RI bowlers said there was a scheduling conflict with an event in CT that a lot of the guys are bowling.
However, rumor has it that Bob Whitcomb, one of the top candlepin bowlers in MA, will be at Johnston for the DPBA tourney in August. I think he'll do well.
