Interesting question. The only t*npin machine I'm at all familiar with is the old AMF 82-70 (I used to work in a house that had those), and I bet you could make it set duckpins with only minor modifications. Of course, it was not the most reliable machine, even used as designed, so I'm not sure how well it would work -- and of course, there's the little matter of the three-ball cycle. I suspect the 82-70 might set duckpins if you modified the pin cups somewhat -- but how to make it allow a third ball, that would take some doing!

As the owner of several tenpin centers and owning all of the different versions of machines in tenpin Brunswick A, A-2 and Jetback as well as AMF 82/30, 82/70 and 82/90 I can tell you that it can not be done. This mainly because of the size differences between the pins and balls and the different cycles that the machine must perform and the difference of how the information is relayed to the machine. In duckpin the inputs are given manually by the bowler using the two different buttons to perform the cycle that you wish but in tenpin all the information is given to the machine by either the machine itself or by the automatic scoring cameras. One possibile method is the string machine which is not used in the states other than on the mini games and in fact the AMF version of the mini game which is Thunderbowl uses duckpins to simulate a mini tenpin game.
